Let The Ramble Begin

I've hit that place again where I just don't have much to say, but really, I think it's not enough time on my hands to sit and place thoughts here.  So let the ramble flow I say and we'll see what happens.

This week I've been plagued with a bit of the allergy thing, waking up with an intense headache this morning.  I finally got rid of it just a bit ago with a strong bit of coffee and just moving around.  It also meant that I didn't work out this morning.  My bad!  I didn't work out on Tuesday either as I had to have my car at the dealership early for a recall notice, oil change and stuff.  Oh well, I will be back at it on Tuesday after a weekend of fun at the cabin.

I've also been grandchild sitting this week as Bri started teaching again.  So on Monday's and Wednesday's I am watching Rio at the office for a good bit of the day.  I was a bit apprehensive about  it because she is still sort of breastfeeding but we had absolutely no issues this week.  She played all morning long, we giggled, laughed and danced then it was a nice lunch and the eye-rub then I knew it was time.  I picked her up, turned on her sound machine, pacifier in place a few pats on her back and she went out like a light.  What was nice was that she slept 2-1/2 hours on Monday and 2 hours on Wednesday, and she's sleeping about 12 hours a night.  I think she has finally got it but it's also that her two front teeth are finally in.  She has four on the bottom and two on the top so far.
She is certainly a fabulous eater.  Cottage cheese being her favorite but at the office yesterday I also fed her fresh figs from my garden which she loves every time she eats them!
Last Thursday night we enjoyed a fun night celebrating The Hubby's birthday and Rio chowed down on avocado from a veggie roll!
See, the office is perfect for the little munchkin.

My recent haul from the garden.  Sadly, I'm only harvesting cucumbers, figs and grape tomatoes this year.  Next year I am going to have a killer garden.  This year I just kind of threw stuff in the ground.  Fall, I will start adding some mulch and composted manure to enhance it for the coming season.  I really want to work it without the damn mosquitoes eating me alive the minute I walk out the door.

I'm home for the day and am going to enjoy every minute of it.  I have got to get my head around my art show that is fast approaching.  I think I've got stuff ready but I want to paint some new stuff.  There are a few shows in the next couple of months but I'm not sure I have it in me right now.  Too much chaos in my head and around me and I will stop doing everything and just sit back and look a the mess.  It will overwhelm me so I have to be cautious.  We are about to begin the new building too so I know that will take up a lot of my mind and thoughts too.  The good thing about all that stuff is that I will get an art studio out of it sooner than later!

Oh gosh, as I sit here in my nice quiet house, ready to be creative and paint I hear sounds, not good sounds.  Rats!  I forgot the concrete guy is here to grout the lines in the new patio, finally!  That means a LOT of noise out there.  I will have to turn up the music to find my peace and serenity.  I'm also home today as I'm a bit nervous as the neighbors one street over had a burglary at noon two days ago!  That scares me for sure.  Luckily we are in and out so much here at home that no burglar can predict when we will be around and I do have neighbors that are home a lot but still!!!

Neighbors - Creepy Update - CAUTION when reading

I failed to mention on the previous week of posts about certain houses and some interesting memories, not so good really.  First is the Knoxville House where sweet Myrtle one evening ran to our house beating on the door screaming, "Dave shot Phyllis, Dave shot Phyllis."  The Hubby wasn't home and I was panicked by this.  It was a terrible story and I was very young, 22 years old and never, NEVER had been a part of something like it.  Her niece was shot point blank by her husband during a domestic thing.  She had gone to pick up some stuff with two police officers on either side of her and as they walked down the sidewalk to the car he came out of the house and shot her dead.  I did not know Phyllis or Dave but I knew Myrtle and I was devastated.  Definitely marked my memories.

The second home, The 58th Street Home had a story after we moved.  The people who bought the house were, shall we say a bit weird, a LOT weird.  There was a husband, wife and a grown son who lived with them.  They were all on all kinds of medication for various things and none worked, they were all on disability for mental somethings.  Well, the pool caused problems because they did not know how to take care of it and were calling The Hubby every year to help them take care of closing and opening and being the kind guy he is, he helped for a couple of years.  Then, one year they called to inform us that their adult son committed suicide in his chair in front of the fireplace (it wasn't pretty).  Great, that is where The Hubby's chair sat with the girls in his lap watching television.  GREAT, just great.  We could have done without that picture in our heads.  The pool has since been filled in and my wonderful flowerbeds are all gone and I've left that house far, far behind.

The Double 07 house came with the memories that are a bit terrifying to A and her memories.  It wasn't the house but the neighborhood.  Around the corner was a house that my child had been to play with the little girl that lived there.  They were in the same class in elementary school.  One day (Oct 19, 19970 I got a phone call at the office from the older girl B to inform me of a tragedy at the house.  The father, Ron Fluke carried out a heinous crime in that house to which he was eventually executed.  I won't go into it but you can read a brief thing about it clicking his name.  It traumatized my daughter who could not understand how a father could do something like that to a daughter.  Her friend Kathryn was gone.  How do you explain something like that to an 11 year old.

Hopefully, in our new house we won't ever have these kind of tragedies to deal with.

Neighbors, Part 5 - Double 07 House

Now we continue the story from The 58th Street House...

We had sold the 58th Street House but the day of the closing on the new house came to a screeching halt.  The wonderful house in a culdesac with a HUGE backyard for a new pool and garden was not to be.  We were faxed the closing info so we could get the cashiers check and found a small paper showing a major gas pipeline that ran through the middle of the backyard property.  It cut through the area for the new pool and garden and the house had been built as far out as it could because of the easements of all of it.  We were lied to or at least the info was hidden in documentation.  We backed out and were left with four weeks to find another house because the closing on our old house was imminent.  I was devasted.  We had already bought a riding lawnmower because the "new" backyard was so huge.

We were yet again on the hunt for a 4 bedroom 2 bath house in a neighborhood that I thought I HAD to have.  We looked at every house at least twice and then looked at a three bedroom that I had seen before, The Double 07 House.  It was a corner house and was a beauty but when I saw it a single man lived in it, a HUGE man.  His furniture was huge and made it seem so very small.  We looked again because it was empty.  We loved it and put a contract on it immediately.  We were happy again but that was short-lived as the guy and the realtor lied to us.  They hid that the house had water in the ducts and the roof leaked.  They patched and hid things.  We only found out because the engineer inspecting had done the previous and found old records of stuff that had NOT been fixed.  They got in tons of trouble, we got a new roof and french drains to fix the water issue.

EEK....Apparantly I don't have pictures of this house either.  Moving day came and we had movers scheduled and had to be out of the house that weekend as we had closed on Friday and were given that weekend to move.  Saturday morning, bright and early we waited for the movers.  They didn't show.  Thank goodness we had a lot of friends with trucks and good backs.  That was the day I lost the feeling in my big toe from being on my feet all day long and more.  Oh my gosh I was tired.  We loved that house and had some wonderful neighbors but not as close as before.

Remember I was going to relate back to the previous neighbors Bob and Kathleen with pesky Julie.  From the old neighborhood Bob and Katleen had moved nearly 5 years previously and we knew not where, nor did we care.  The pest had moved and were quite happy.  Guess what!  Across the street from the Double 07 House there were our old neighbors Bob and Kathleen.  Who in their wildest dreams think we would be neighbors again.  Thank goodness Julie had moved away and we never saw her again.  Bob and Kathleen because very nice neighbors which we enjoyed visiting with for the 10 years we lived there.

We are now out of that neighborhood and into our 4th house and the plans are for it to be our last but you know that magic 10 year thing is fast approaching.  I may get itchy feet to do it again!

Neighbors, Part 2

I've written about neighbors growing up now I'm on to neighbors after I married!

You see me there, apartment 1, on the porch.  We drive by this apartment building often and I still dream about it.  We lived there exactly one year when we bought our first home.  Those porches are now enclosed rooms.  I hated that they did that.  In my dream world we purchase the six apartment building and make it a house for us.  That first year was the hardest but the one with some of the most wonderful memories for me.  Upstairs in apartment 3 lived a guy named Steve.  The Hubby still hears from him once in awhile.  Nice guy, single, big, big curly hair.  We used to hear his music, which we didn't mind but we also heard other sounds....he was single!  EGAD!  To the right, apartment 2 we had several neighbors but one I remember was a young girl that sang opera.  You could hear her practice and I loved it.  Our landlord was an old guy in his early 80's named Mr. Zwieacher (think that is how I remember it spelled).  He was an amazing man.  One day The Hubby came home to find him on the back staircase with a hot water tank on his back trying to haul it upstairs to install.  Amazing man!

Neighbors and Friends

My Daddy has the best neighbors although one may be getting kind of tired of being a good guy.  When Daddy could not mow his yard the neighbor to the north of him starting mowing his yard with a riding lawn mower.  Daddy has taken a bit of advantage of this neighbor because he is a carpenter.  Daddy has tapped Steve to work on his shed and a few other things and Steve told me quite honestly so.  Yet, the lawn is still getting mowed and I told Steve that when he gets tired of doing it then just tell Daddy so and we will find someone else.  In fact, I talked to my sister and hopefully her son and husband will get it done for now.

Yesterday, after I left Daddy's from the weekly trip to the grocery store I rounded the backside of his yard and saw someone in his yard.  The very tanned man was shirtless and on his knees in the middle of Daddy's yard, next to the tomato plants and the weeds were flying.  On closer inspection I realized it was Don, Daddy's neighbor behind him, across the alley.  There too was Don's wheelchair.  Yes, his neighbor and friend is wheelchair bound and has been for probably 40 years but let me tell you it does not stop Don.  He was diagnosed with some form of MS or something and his legs do not work well but that man does not let it stop him at all.  There he was, in Daddy's garden weeding for Daddy.  Daddy didn't know about it because he can't get to his back porch much less the backyard.  What a great neighbor and friend Don is and he probably would not have even told him, but I did.  Don was in Daddy's graduating class I believe and they have in common the loss of their wives from COPD.  They are friends and neighbors that take care of each other.

Here's is to Don and Steve, the best neighbors and friends

No Dance

Just got home from dinner with The Hubby.  It's dancing night but I bowed out tonight as I've dealing with and I mean DEALING WITH Daddy stuff.  I will post about it probably in a few days when things settle down.  Anyway, home from dinner and as I am coming down my street and putting the garage door up I see a girl on the elderly neighbors doorstep.  At first I thought it might be there daughter but as I pulled into the drive, my windows down I hear, "Howdy neighbor.  I just live a couple of streets over.  How are you this evening, blah, blah, blah."  I knew right then and there she was selling something and I was going to go over and take care of my neighbors.  I got out of the car, leaving the garage door open and went around to get my purse and the take home food and of course here she comes spewing the same spiel.  She actually came right into my garage right up to me and that disturbed me.  She asked me if I went to college or my husband and then asked me if I liked baseball or softball.  She said something about a local college too.  I was not in a good mood.  This was not a day to cross me.  I bluntly asked her what she was selling.  The smile fell and she said, "Children's books."  I said, "You need to leave."  I waved my hand to go away and kind of pushed her to move out of my garage.  She said, "You didn't need to say it like that."  Whatever!  She went across the street to C's and I quickly called the police.  Something did not feel right about this whole set up and my mind went to something about letting a young girl in and she stabbed and robbed them, here in my town!  C from across the street sent her on her way and she went to the neighbor on the other side of us and got no response.  Then she went across the street again and I saw Mr.M open his door.  Uh oh, I called the neighbor across the street and told her what I did and then I called Mr.M's phone but it went to voice mail which told me his wife was gone while he chatted with Miss Cute Young Thing.  I watched and watched and OH NO!!!!!!  He let her in and the front door shut.  I knew that was not good.  These kind of people want to case your house or do bodily harm.  I called C again and she said, "Let me go next door and ring the bell."  I watched as she did and they whole crew came out.  Miss Cute Young Thing didn't stop at another house but proudly walked off with Mr.M's check.  I went across the street to talk to Mr.M and C about it and he said he is so gullible.  We voiced our concerns about them casing the house or possibly bodily harm and then he asked if we thought he should stop his check. YES,  HELL YES!  He asked if I saw where she went and I pointed.  When I went inside I noticed his truck was gone.  I bet you anything he went after her to get his check back.  Hope he did.  CREEPY!

You've Got A Friend

I'm sure you have read here many, many times my rants about a friend.  A friend like Gail, like my Momma or like Lucy and Ethel.  I have been searching for that kind of friendship since 2006 when Gail and Mom passed away and guess what, I think I've found it, unexpectedly.  It is not exactly Lucy and Ethel but it is fun and I am happy.  In my art class that I started 2 years ago (I think), during one of the conversations that goes on all the time, I met a lady sitting next to me, Sheila.  Sheila is a phenomenal artist and absolutely runs rings around me art wise and life wise.  Sheila and I found out that we live across the street from pne another.  What!  How awesomely exciting!  Sheila is 72 years old and I just love her to death.  I joined an art organization that she belongs to, Alpha Rho Tau (ART) and we go to meetings together.  She calls me and asks about my father or sister or family or about anything we have talked about in class.  She is doing Weight Watchers too, so when she knows I weigh in she calls to check on my progress.  Who would have thought.  She and her hubby had us over for dinner one night so I need to have them over too.  She is a wonderful friend and I get a friend and mother figure all rolled into one.  Granted I can't talk to her about sex and stuff but she is a great ear and thinks about me a lot.  I am happy.

The Big Thaw

The Big Thaw has begun, but wait it is to only be a brief happening as more is expected today and Tuesday.  The Hubby insisted yesterday that we take the Jeep, my car out and try out the 4WD.  My poor Daddy has been home bound for his hip thing and I was worried about his driveway as the city had plowed right over the entrance.  Last time I checked his home health care nurse could not get to his house because of it.  So off we headed to see him.  Actually the highway was not too bad but the side streets were still in awful shape.  It was weird seeing all the abandoned cars along the roads, with piles of snow on them.  It will be summer before they are able to pull them out.  We arrived at Daddy's and his drive was opened up.  I just talked to him on the phone and said that is why we were coming down.  One of his hearing aids is on the fritz and he probably just heard we were coming.  No problem, he needed the company.  The Hubby got right to work cleaning his sidewalk, front step, and huge icicles off of his eaves around the house.  He also cleared the huge snow drift at his back door so he could open it if an emergency.  The neighbor across the street had already headed for the grocery for some milk so, our work was to visit.  We did go to the liquor store to get his box wine of sangria he loves so much at dinner.  I was to take him to the doctor tomorrow but he had me reschedule, afraid of moving out and about in the stuff.

One of the main objectives to getting out was to go to Bass Pro Shop for me some tall wader-like boots, like The Hubby's.  My guess would be so that I could help him clear snow!  While moving that direction we caught some of the hills and sledding.  My the kids were having fun and this scene was played out all over the area.  I never thought I would say this, but it looked a bit fun.

Finally, we got to Bass Pro Shop and after a bite of lunch the great hunt was on for the perfect boot.  My new fashion accessory, what do you think.  Actually, we passed by the women's clothing and I found a few cute things.  Who knew!

Back to T-Town we were off to the empty-shelved grocery store and the masses of people.  Our neighbors are in their 80's and we had an extensive list for their needs too.  The parking lot was CRAZY!  The Hubby dropped me at the door and I started the big hunt.  He came in after parking and we started to fill our separate lists of stuff.  There were a lot of empty shelves but really it wasn't too awful bad.  People, people, people but you know, everyone was very nice and I think glad to be OUT and about.  At check out The Hubby took the neighbors stuff and I took ours.  Didn't take a lot of time and we were on our way.  Going to the parking lot all of a sudden one of my eyes started having the funny shapes of light, uh oh, migraine!  By the time we made the 7 minute drive home my head was starting to hurt.  Quick, Ibuprofen and caffeine, my granny's recipe for relief!

Later in the evening the pain has subsided but this morning I'm thinking I have a sinus infection.  It happens every time there is snow and they start the sanding and salt.  I think there is something in the mixture that sets me off.  Crazy.  Netti pot here I come.

Week in Review

This is a self portrait just before I left to go to my multi-class reunion last weekend.  I like it.  That was a fun day.

This week I've taken several days off from the office as I will a good part of the summer.  B is not teaching this summer so will be in the office!  I have been planning to paint but that has just not happened, yet.  I spent most of this week running a lot of errands and visiting with my BFF who has been dealing with cancer.  I stopped by and ended up staying 3 hours just talking.  It was very nice.  I went to the greenhouse for climbing roses for the trellis at the cabin and tomatoes for B&B's garden...I expect some tomatoes. ;)

This weekend The Hubby has gone to Minnesota for a flashlight show.  Several years ago, 1998, The Hubby and I hosted the first ever flashlight show in Tulsa and the paper even did an article on him.  In 2008, we hosted the 10th show here.  They have them every year and he loves to attend and feels an obligation to attend since he is the one who got the ball rolling.  I don't!  They're fun while they are here but I choose not to attend in other states.  We used to do lighter shows too, yes, cigarette lighters.  He has a collection of those too but has maxed out on it.  I prefer them as they are so beautiful, especially the trench art ones.  I have to say also that we do not smoke and never did but he collects them because it was an era, truly.

Anyway, I opted to head to the cabin this weekend and enjoy the wonderful weather that the weather people are predicting.  Unfortunately, they are predicting 90 degree weather and the A/C unit is acting up!  It's really not too bad with a fan on me.  Last night, with the windows open the air was very nice but the neighbors were not cooperating with the peace and quiet.  There are some here for a wedding at the wigwam and their cabin is full of people, lots and lots of people who do not understand the peace and quiet of our little heaven on earth.  We come here for no motor boats, birds singing, and communing with nature.  Last night I hit the pillow about 10 pm, woke with a start at 10:30 from a bad dream, back asleep at about 11:15 when I was jolted out of that wonderful sleep by fireworks.  FIREWORKS!!!!!  These were not little poppy things but huge boom, rattle the window kind by my neighbors.  They were actually being set off in the meadow but it was 11:15 PM!!!!!  Very quickly my other neighbor, Jimbo hopped onto his golf cart and flew down there to stop the insanity!!!!!  Three boys from the wedding neighbors.  Where in the world were the presumed grownups to stop this.  Teach these kids respect for people please.  Stupid!!!!!  I then could not drift off to sleep till after 1:30 and then was up at 5 to feed the dog and potty.  RATS!!!!!

Nicer thoughts now...

Yesterday I was sitting on the couch drifting off for a quick nap with I noticed the little ceramic birdhouse that a friend gave me a few years ago.  I hung it on the porch but it has remained empty, till now.  I noticed a bird popping in and out with little twigs and stuff for a nest.  YEAH!  There were actually two of them building and I realized that they were a Prothonotary Warbler, a pair.  They were preparing a nest on my porch.

Now my picture is not good as I did not want to disturb them....

So here is an Internet generated one...after reading the link
I find they quite fascinating and really lucky to have them on my porch.  Hope they stay!

It's quiet here.

I am writing this at the cabin, technically neighbors cabin using Grumps Internet connection across the street. Harry and Jimbo are gone for the day, actually until tomorrow morning along with Sin and Bare. So it will be very quiet here. The Hubby left to go back to town this morning and won't be back so I'm by myself for the rest of the day and night. It's so quiet here. The holiday is over and it is hot so most are not up here. There are no golf carts zooming by and construction is done for the weekend and since it is so hot and dry the grass is not growing so no mowing. I hear birds and bugs buzzing around. In fact a little hummingbird just buzzed my head under this umbrella and just hung out and stared at me for a few seconds.
I'm going to use this time today to:
* Write this entry
* Write in my paper journal
* Read blogs
* Write letters
* Read my book, finish it and start another
* and tonight maybe watch a movie, The Kite Runner

It's quiet here!
________________________________________
It has been an awful week for me, medically. I had some issues, skin issues in the nether regions that caused me lots of sleepless nights, pain and just plain fear. On one of those nights of sleeplessness I started going over my history of skin eruptions and found a big correlation - STRESS and how I handle it.

1970 - My great grandfather passed away and it was my first funeral. I broke out in horrific hives that apparently were partially internal which made me vomit a lot along with the itching. Stress event 1

1970 - My first formal dance. My date had to bring me home early because I broke out in hives and hives just don't wear well with a formal gown. Stress event 2

2005 - My reluctant acceptance to do the books/accounting of our lake homeowners financial stuff. I developed a rash all over my upper half of my body, especially on my chest. Itch city and many, many visits to the dermatologist and lots of money spent to have it completely gone 2 days after I resigned the position. I was not sleeping and was a basket case with the heaviness of the responsibility of the job, a volunteer job. Stress event 3

Jan-Feb 2008 - B & B2 planning and having a wedding...my arms were in a constant itchy rash. Wedding over and within a month it cleared up on it's own. I also was sick as a dog with a cold and no voice. Stress event 4

July 5, 2008 - The Hubby is in a very scary fireworks accident which results in a stay in ICU Burn on a vent for 3 days. Stress event 5

I was very strong and calm and handled it all well. The ensuing result is my stress popped out in skin issues and painful skin ulcers in places that are not seen. All this was made worse by my regular doc being on vacation, my GYN is on vacation, my dermatologist is on vacation. I was told to go to a minor emergency. I'm NOT taking my nether region to a minor emergency! Stress is piled onto stress as the skin eruption is getting worse and spreading and I'm even more stressed by this and the worry that I'm not sleeping and I'm very uncomfortable and FREAKED OUT. Finally, after crying on the phone to a nurse in the dermatologist office I am allowed to see the PA, which I thought was a woman. When I did meet Terry, it was a guy, but I was that point of ANYTHING! I'm healing with tons of antibiotics but this has all made me think about how I deal with stress. When The Hubby was first in the emergency room on the vent and I was sitting there watching him all alone I had the intense need for pen and paper. I NEEDED to write what I was feeling but there was none to be had. Maybe if I had written my feelings instead of bottling them up, or even if I had fallen apart the stress might not have manifested itself in the skin stuff. If, if, if. Well, I'm writing now and I'm going to have to keep a little notebook in my purse for the next stress event.

A Weekend Away

I was able to get away yesterday (Friday) with my top down on the little red Miata to escape to the cabin. What a wonderful drive I had and when I arrived I was able to see the beauty of the area and our yard. I came up her on Wednesday and make the flowerbed I've been wanting to around the dead stump of a tree out front. I hoisted that top soil and planted the clematis plants and it looked beautiful. I came ready to enjoy the weekend reading books, magazines, walking, and lounging in the hammock. The only downside of the place in the woods is the terrible pollen from all the wonderful trees. A few weeks ago I spent 2 hours cleaning off the screened porch and so when I arrived yesterday and saw the nasty porch again I was let down and knew what I had to do.The floor was absolutely yellowish-green from all the pollen. So I began the process of moving all the furniture out and sweeping and sneezing and hosing it out.

After all the pollen dust had been swept and washed off I was ready for my reward which was an afternoon in the hammock.

As I lay reading some of my magazines I dozed off and was awakened by a light thumping on the hammock. I opened my eyes and there was a tiny goldfinch on the strings of the hammock pecking at them and hopping up and down which was making the disturbance on the hammock. He would peck and then look at me to see if I was a threat. He soon flew off into the trees. Very cool.

And now I sit at the neighbors outside table and pirate the other neighbors Internet and enjoy the beauty of the day. The air is cool but the sun is warm. The trees are filled with the wonderous songs of all kinds of birds. The neighbor of who I am pirating his Internet connection just came over here and brought me a beautiful stalk of white iris that is from his yard. I told him I was using his connection and he said, "I know what you are doing. I thought a lady deserved to have flowers." He is a very sweet man and dear friend. I love this place and the people.

The Weekend

Finally got a whole weekend at the cabin and I feel refreshed although I don't know if you can feel refreshed when you just hosted a dinner gathering for 16. It was great fun. The Hubby smoked a DAMN good brisket and everyone brought a side dish or dessert or appetizer. I made a couple of great recipes. In the Cooking Light magazine (not sure which month) is a very simple recipe for Fresh Corn Salad. FABULOUS! Run out today and get the copy for that recipe alone. It was fast, simple and delicious. I also found a recipe on the web for a sopapilla cheesecake (the one with 2 pkg of crescent rolls and 3 pkgs of cream cheese). It was very good but you want to eat it warm as it kind of stringy. We had good food and great conversation, at the the guys had some great conversation. They were enamored by a guest of one of our guests. They were pilots together and the guests-guest used to be a Romanian MIG fighter pilot. The men (little boys) were intriqued by his stories. The man was very nice but the instant he sat one foot in our door the stories started and 3 of the men didn't even make into the kitchen to eat they were so wrapped up in the center of attention that was the guests-guest. I was a little perturbed because I could hardly get the eating started with the rest of the guests, but all in all the evening was huge success at the party didn't break up till around 11 and usually the lake parties break up about 9.

On the note of the lake. The water is down on the wigwam but still totally covering the meadows and the swimming area and the dam is still totally under. The vegetation that was under is rotting and absolutely stinks.

Toddles all as I surf the web.
