Retirement?

I started this post about our health around here and realized that you did not want to know about all that.  I'll just say achoo, hack, run to bathroom and leave it at that.

This retirement thing is weird, just REALLY WEIRD.  Not me so to speak, I've got it down, it's The Hubby.  He's here all day long, sitting in his chair, all day long.  Granted he's been sick this week, but he's here and it's just weird to see him do that.  I think because I've only seen him go, go, go our entire married life and he's taking it easy.  I didn't think he could do it.  I don't mind but he's HERE!

The photo above was taken at the Tulsa Garden Center's Wine and Roses fundraiser a couple of weeks ago.  I thought it was a great photo of us and lately I've HATED every photo I've had taken of me the past few years.

Update: Life in General

This is just a little update about our little Bubs.
Notice something...

no oxygen in his nose.
Yesterday he went to the heart doctor which is every other week and they said no more oxygen, except at night right now but begin the weaning off of it.  He still has a heart monitor but said that needs to be weaned off (mostly the parents need to be weaned off of it!)  PLUS, he doesn't have to go back for a month.  I knew that would happen.  He is just doing so very well and just keeps progressing.  Now we tackle the food thing and he will have it made, till the next surgery.

MIGHTY MAX

Last week I scooted off to the cabin on a Wednesday and stayed till Sunday!!!  I figured I had nothing else going on and I'M RETIRED!!!  The Hubby showed up Friday afternoon.  It was absolute bliss.  I sat on my screened porch with a fire, my book and then I painted a bit.  Absolute bliss.

I painted a still life...

"Fall is in the Air"
and...
"Big Red"
which I already sold.  Yes I have painted him before, in fact this is the third time, but they sell almost immediately.

Back to reality (meaning to town) and I hit the ground running with a 1-1/2 hour visit to the dealership for "required maintenance" and to get two nails out of one of my tires.  Glad I didn't have a blowout on the drive to the cabin.  Tuesday was our annual review on our retirement accounts, and finally Wednesday a bit of time at the easel.  I finished this little jewel and really like it.

"Fall Hay"
16x20

Monday was also back to cooking for us.  I had some frozen shrimp, feta, tomatoes, asparagus and rice.  I decided to do the feta back with the tomatoes then took out the immersion blender and whizzed up this to pour over a 1/4 cup of rice.  The asparagus I roasted in the oven and halfway through put the shrimp on top.  All seasoned with salt and pepper and I think Italian seasoning.  It was pretty yummy.

The week before I had my annual Medicare physical.  Don't mind telling you I was jittery about it.  I'm kind of a white coat-syndrome gal, my blood pressure tends to be high at first.  I was worried because I've again put a few pounds on ARGHHHHH!  But when the nurse put the cuff on I was amazed it was pretty perfect!  Then of course he harped on my weight and was again trying to push the Monjaro like diabetes drugs that people are taking to lose weight.  I AGAIN explained that first of all several of them, if not all, have warnings about a rare thyroid cancer.  I have thyroid issues in my family, me included, benign tumors on brother and my father's thyroid (his removed.)  My great-grandfather on my mother's side DIED of thyroid cancer.  So I am not inclined to be a test subject on that crap.  Also, many years ago there was FenFin that everyone was doing to lose weight and I was one of those that was put on it.  I lost weight, yes.  I stopped it (not sure why) and boy am I glad because the bad side effect was heart damage and open heart surgeries!!!!!  HOLY CRAP!  So I will continue on with eating fairly well on my own, ESPECIALLY after my labs came back.  To quote my doctor, "your labs are EXCELLENT!"  Well, that answers a lot about how I'm doing on my food.  I probably, know I should be exercising.  I'm going to take some steps in that direction...LOL.

Work, Watercolors and BIRTHDAY

Watercolors...that is what I've been up to lately.
Last week I took off on a Wednesday for the cabin and I stayed until Monday!!!  He didn't join me until Sunday because he was dealing with roofers at the shop and he had several dance things.  I spent my time, nearly all of it on my screened porch enjoying the stunning weather, the birds at my feeders, my fireplace (because the mornings were just downright chilly,) and painting.  I brought my watercolors and I painted and painted on this painting.  I took the photo a few days before at the Tulsa Garden Center where our oldest now works knowing it would be a great painting.  I decided to try my hand at it in watercolor and have not been disappointed.  I've also got it sketched in for oils and will try that as well, but I'm very pleased with this so far.
These watercolors are really quite fun and a bit freeing.  They are the opposite of oil painting so it makes my mind think differently, but I'm up for a challenge, and it seems to pay off.
In a few days (Sunday) I will celebrate another trip around the calendar and will turn 67 years old.  GOOD F...NG GRIEF!  So very hard to believe I'm pushing 70 now.  Really do not feel like I'm in my late 60's.  That is just a foreign concept to this brain.  Not going to let anything slow me down though.  I've got too much more to do.
Still working at the office a tiny bit.  The only thing I'm doing in the accounting side of things is try to get the last three customers to settle their accounts.  About 2 weeks ago I sent a letter to them stating that even though we are retired, had closed our doors for doing electrical work, that MY job was not done in wrapping up the accounting and could they kindly settle up.  Well, it worked and two of them paid while I was hanging at the cabin!!!  Now one left and really don't see it coming so will have to write it off and BE DONE WITH IT!  I will contact the accountant in about a week and a half and we may get to shut down the checking account!!! Whoopee!!!!!!  Then I can go in and close out, combine a couple more accounts and be done with it all.  so exciting.

A Fishin' We Will Go, a Fishin' We Will Go

Thursday we did something.  The Hubby's oldest brother set it up with a fishing guide to go fishing on Lake Eufaula for the day for crappie.  I love fishing, I have a lifetime fishing license.  It's really been years since I've even caught a fish.  I really wasn't too keen on going because I'm not a fan of being on a boat but I knew he wanted to do the experience with me.  So onward.

The drive early, EARLY in the AM on Thursday was a bit sketchy because there was so much fog but it was drivable.  We made it and his brother and wife were excited to show us their new house they are nearly finished in building and to go to breakfast.  Finally, we were headed to the boat launch and we were off.

The water was so very still and quiet that morning.  It was a bit cool as we were speeding on to the crappie spots but I had my shirt and The Hubby found me a great hat that I LOVE!  We slathered on SPF 100 sunscreen and were set to fish.  I caught several but after four hours I was hot and baking on the water as the temperatures started climbing.
The clouds started coming in as I knew the weather was bringing rain later in the evening.  It made for wonderful photos to paint.  I took lots of pics and then insisted, after the four hours, that I was DONE and needed, urgently, a bathroom.  So they headed in to the brother-in-laws dock area where his wife, sister-in-law picked me up, because they guys were heading back out.
I was concerned for the BIL because he is on oxygen but he seemed to be fine as long as he was seated and he was having such a great time.  I told SIL that we would have to get after them at some point because neither brother wanted to disappoint the other by stopping.  After another three hours they FINALLY came in, only because they ran out of bait...LOL!
All in all, between the three of us we caught about 40 fish, which the guide cleaned for us.  Friday night was fish for dinner.
After that long day we drove back home, gathered our stuff and food and headed for the cabin for a long weekend, after a stop for a quick dinner.

The drive was just beautiful.

Once there we sure hit the bed early.  I wanted to go on Thursday because I knew it was supposed to rain all day Friday and The Hubby LOVES to be there when it rains.

We got up Friday morning and of course it was raining.  I got a nice fire going in our porch fireplace and kept it going Friday and Saturday.  So SOOOO very nice.

Saturday morning the rain was gone and the fire was blazing as the morning was clean and bright.  I filled my bird feeders and kicked back to enjoy the day.  The evening before I went to see my friend Lesa for a drink and she wondered if I was going to watercolor.  She is a novice and I told her I would help her learn.  I got my watercolors out and piddled and she came in the afternoon and we had a great time painting. I really felt like I'm an artist, that I really know what I am doing.

At some point before she popped over I took a golf cart ride to the meadow and was treated with these beauties.  The club has planted several patches of wildflowers and they are STUNNING!  And they are full of bees just filling the air with buzzing.

It was a most perfect weekend.  I love retirement.

A New Normal

This retirement thing.  It is a bit weird.  Really, I've been partially retired for a long time now, but this duo retirement is a whole new ball of wax.  Every morning for years and years and YEARS the alarm clock has gone off at 5 am.  I roll over, tap the shut off button, and we are off an running for the day.  Mostly he was off and running, but I was still up.  There are still times I roll over and look at the clock dial to see what time it is and it's 4 or 5 am but we don't get up.  I still do occasionally, especially at the cabin in the spring and summer.  I LOVE to wake up and sit on the screened porch and listen to the birds start to wake up, now I can hear them through the windows but I don't get up.

Now we are trying to renegotiate a new normal in our lives.  He sleeps in, I sleep in.  Before retirement I would hit the stop alarm, turn the TV on the the news and we would get up.  He would fix his bowl of cereal and coffee, and I my coffee and protein bar.  He would sit in the living room eating and watching the news.  I would go to my chair in the bedroom and turn the TV to Charmed, something I've watched every morning for over 20 years.  After a bit it was the bathroom stuff, get dressed, brush teeth, etc.  Now it's cockeyed a bit.  We get up with no alarm, just a normal gradual wake up.  Now it's me with no Charmed, him watching his recorded stuff or on his phone.  It's like 8 maybe 9 am and we are still trudging around.  He still has stuff to do at the shop, mainly getting the units ready to rent, paint the fence, fix a leak in the roof, stuff like that.  I might go and paint, do a little book work, pay some bills, IF I WANT TOO!

It's also awkward moving around each other in the kitchen, the bathroom.  We had a rhythm, but now it's a bit broken and we bump into each other, are in each others way.  It will take some time but we will work it out, I'm sure.  We need to create a new normal.

I have been hoping to spend more time at the cabin but that has not happen with watching kiddos and stuff, but it will, soon.  Summer will help with that.

Retirement

Week one of retirement.  Honestly we haven't slowed down much.  He's been working hard to get the "now" rental units up to speed for showing to rent.  I go in every morning to do a bit of work, paying bills or making a deposit.  I've only been able to paint once so far and today will be the second time to attempt but I still have to leave to pick up Min.  They have a doctors appointment in OKC this morning so she will be with me till around 3-4 today.

After the auction last week, in the wee hours of the early morning the next day we had some gremlins thinking they were going to get lucky.  The last employee/friend who came to the auction still has access to our cameras (he works on them for us.)   He was looking at the cameras over his morning Diet Pepsi when he saw an interloper in the compound.  Sure enough, about 3:30 in the morning behind the pole barn with some handy wire snips in two different places the fence was cut open.
I suspect whoever it was probably was at the auction and thought they would get lucky.  Well, he was dead wrong.  Most of the expensive stuff was already picked up and what was left was safely locked away in armed buildings.  IDIOTS!!!  Idiots that cost us over $800 to repair the fence and reposition the cameras.  Really pisses me off that someone wants to do this kind of work for what they think is an easy buck when in reality it's NOT AN EASY BUCK!
Onward where my blood is not boiling.

Watched Min on Wednesday so they could make their weekly trip to OKC.  It was such a beautiful day so we played outside a bit.  Probably not a good idea with her horrible allergies but she will get used to it.  This kid loves to be outside.
Inside later we watched this guy on a PBS station paint.  I'm not too much of a fan of his but it will suffice till my soaps are on.  She seemed to be entranced by it all.  It was too cute.
Later in the day of course we watched Jeopardy and I was amazed when she started singing the Jeopardy song.  I couldn't get my phone fast enough.  Too CUTE!

She sure is trying to be a big helper for her little brother.  It's very sweet.

Painting beginning...
I took the photo several years ago while we were in NYC for the Allied Artist show at the Salmagundi.  I snapped the photo and he quickly caught sight of me as I put the camera down trying to look innocent.  He just had a great look and I thought would make a great painting, someday.  Looks like it's SOMEDAY!

Auction Day

It is done.  The auction is done.  Everything is gone, with the exception of one drafting table and my beloved desk.
Since last week the auctioneer has been gathering and coordinating everything to get ready for yesterday.
There were pallets of everything you can imagine, all very organized.  Yesterday it was very methodically auctioned off to high bidders, everything we have amassed over the past 44 years, less the property, in just a few short hours, gone.
Fork lifts, skyjack lifts, vehicles, trailers, etc.  It was quite amazing.
The sale was to begin at 1:30 but the preview, if you wanted began at 10 am.  We got there at 7 am and did not leave until 8 pm last night, trying to find SOMEPLACE to get a bite for a very late dinner.

We also were overjoyed to see lots of old friends, family and old employees of the past, some well over 30 years ago since last seen.  There were probably over 100 people there and the auctioneer told Robert that it was because of our reputation as one of the best electrical contracting companies in town that the attendance was so high.  Plus, some were quite jealous of us getting out, retiring.

We even had some extra little munchkins come and see all the whoopla going on.  We raised our girls in this company and now their babies get to say goodbye to it.  I couldn't stay inside while it was all going on, the curiosity was just too great.  In fact, because it was such a beautiful day I got a sunburn on my chest because I was out so long.
It was a bit surreal to see all we have worked for gone in just a few hours.  He was a part of every bid, every handshake, every person that walked through.  Always.

A penny for your thoughts my love.

Closing Day

Friday was our last day of business and Robert has been saving this bottle of Crown Royal for nearly 43 years. In 1980 a few weeks before Christmas he bought a case of it to give out as gifts to customers and others who helped us in our first year of business. On Christmas Eve he worked late on a customer’s remodel and had one bottle left which he tried to give away to them. They politely turned down his gift saying they were not alcohol drinkers. He kept the bottle and told me we would open it when we retired. Ironically we live two houses away from that same customer he tried to gift that Christmas Eve. We broke the seal this morning and had a shot (it was 5 o’clock somewhere, lol). Here’s to 44 years of success in business, to our friends and customers and our very supportive family.

The End of an Era

We were married in 1976, both 19 years old, young, in love, happy and driven.
One year later, after living in an apartment close to Swan Lake, we had saved up enough to put a down payment on this lovely, and with the help of the best in real estate, my granddaddy, we purchased our first home.

In 1979, we were expecting our first child and he was working 7 days a week 12 hours a day, at a company with side jobs to make extra income.  I was working too, in a job I HATED.  I couldn't wait to have our baby and QUIT to become a stay at home mother.

Little did I know I really did not quit work, it was just more manageable and enjoyable.
In that year, 1979, the same month we had our little girl in this tiny 900 square foot home we started our business, Alrac Electric.  We were very young and new parents, but had a tense dedication to make a buck and save.  I had high school accounting knowledge, a great accountant who mentored me, and he had the electrical know-how.  We started our business.  That first year it was a struggle but he worked non-stop and we survived.  About a year later we had to have employee help.  We had our first big job, a manufacturing building of which the wife of the man who owned it is/was still a customer of ours after 44 years.  The Hubby/Robert handled the work part and I kept my nose to the grindstone, crunching the numbers, making sure all the bills were paid.  One evening, in the middle of the job, he came home and was just beside himself, thinking we were done, we were not going to make it, that we were going to lose our shirts on this job.  His confidence had left him.  He just knew that he had failed.  I stayed up late into the midnight hours to again crunch numbers, what we were spending on the materials, payroll, etc.  The next morning I told him, yes it looks on the outside like we were failing, but in the long run, we will make a little money, we will be fine.  In the red on paper, does not mean we are losing our shirts, that is just on paper.  When you look out at the long picture, we will be okay.  He trusted me.  He seemed to exhale the fear out and went back to work and kept his head down, making it happen while I carried on doing the number stuff.  It has truly been a partnership in making Alrac Electric a successful company.

We kept at it day after day.  Every morning in that tiny little 900 square foot house with the baby asleep, we would get up, make coffee, have breakfast and wait for the employees to come in the living room, ready to work.  For 10 years we lived in that house, but it wasn't always the location of Alrac Electric.

1983, we purchased a lot of land and built a building.  Again, with the help of my granddaddy he took us to his savings and loan in Broken Arrow, where he knew people, boy did he know people.  We got a construction loan.  Robert was absolutely TERRIFIED to do that.  He hates to owe money of any kind, I don't care if it is a dollar, he hates it.  I told him we would be fine, we could handle it.  Our tiny little company was prospering, we had work and we could not do it out of our little home anymore.
We stayed in this location for 30 years, through many jobs, many employees and another baby.  The original building was added onto twice, and with each expansion more purchase of property.  After thirty years of business here we were bulging at the seams and landlocked with no hope of any kind of expansion.

For many years Robert had his eye out for another purchase of land or building(s). We had amassed enough money we could do that.  He had always loved this stone building and tried to purchase it once before but just couldn't make the deal happen.  He had a vision and I supported his vision.  He has never steered me wrong in what he saw.  So about 10 years ago we bought the stone building, with a massive pole barn building in the back.  We sat on the property for a few years to build up the money again and then...
built the building beside it, fixed up the pole barn and the inside of the stone building.  The added building has 4 units in it and we've rented out two of the units for several years with the last two, used for Alrac.  The old location we still own and it has been continually rented since we moved out of it.  The two units that Alrac used will be rented out too.

Today we say goodbye to Alrac Electric, a company we have nurtured and built to an extremely successful company that survived 44 years in the ups and downs of the construction industry and economy.
The stone building, the first floor is my new art studio and the second floor one of our son-in-laws has a music practice/recording studio.  The pole barn is his man cave, he deserves it!

Today we will invoice out the last invoice to the last customer and in the next few months I will pay the last of the bills, and collect the last of the accounts receivable.  My work may not be quite done, but his is.

I hope to see him this happy everyday from now on.  He truly deserves to be fully retired.  Oh it will be a bit tough for him as he is very driven person, but I don't have any doubt that there will always be fish to be fried up and a dance to be done by this guy.

Happy Retirement Robert, I love you!

Sketching and Max Update

I have had one busy week.  I was in my car every single day and Thursday I was in and out and in and out of my car.  I was the Granny-Taxi most of the week and boy was I bushed.  Trying to get some art in has been tricky lately.  Thursday, because I knew I was going to be on the go all day, I had spare time at 7:30 am, so to the studio I went to at least splash a bit of paint around.  I went Wednesday too but it was kind of busy there with a customer and friend in for Linda.  Chatting was the task of the morning.  I still have my drawing supplies, or a lot of them, at the house along with the watercolors.  Today I could of gone to the studio but I just did not want to venture out, or put a bra on so in I stayed.  I spent the morning sketching a bit.

Hopefully the cows will get a tinge of watercolor on it.  My mind is kind in a whirl as the studio move is probably going to be sooner than later.

The Hubby has been making room for me at the office, even though we are still technically a working business still.  Work is slowing down tons and basically we have a month and a half left.  B has begun the purge of our files, the accounting ones so we can move out some of the file cabinets we won't need anymore.  It's really a bit scary, something I've wanted for awhile, yet scary.  Kind of having a a hard time letting go of my actual desk.  I love that piece of furniture but really it won't be needed soon.  Just need a space for the computer and printer for minimal accounting stuff.  After 44 years of doing what I do yet wanting to be done with it, I am finding it hard to let it go.  Hmmm, imagine.

Tomorrow will begin another week of the Granny-Taxi stuff starting with heading to their house to watch Min as she doesn't have school on Monday's.  I go there to give him a break of rushing her out of the house.  It's just easier for all.  This weekend they headed to OKC to see Af and Max and Nick finally got to hold his baby boy. Max is now a tad over a month old and is close to heading home!  All he has now is the NG feeding tube in his nose.  This past week they did a swallow test to see if he can be fed by mouth but he failed.  With all the tubes down his throat and having his chest cracked open one of his vocal cords was damaged.  Not permanent but it caused a paralysis.  His cry was kind of a squeaky cry, not full on because of the paralysis and this also affected the swallowing.  It would mend eventually but they can also do an injection of a botox-like medicine that can usually help quicker.  They did that injection on Friday and scoped his throat and saw absolutely no reason that he can't take food via his mouth.  It will just take some time either in the hospital and a longer stay or they will send him home with a G-tube directly in his stomach and his parents can work with getting him to taking food through his mouth and he would be home in a couple of weeks!  Not sure what they will be doing at this point but Af was really down because she wants badly to nurse him but she knows it is what it is.  He will come home and that is the most important thing, at least till about June when he will go back for surgery #2 and not another for 2-3 years.  They need to go home because Min NEEDS her momma.  She is in great need of having MOMMA!
