Mother's Day and Weekend Fun

Good morning.  It's another wet morning here but should clear a bit later.  It had better because I have errands to run.  The photo is the dam at our cabin area.  Last weeks storms and monumental rains have the creek way up, up enough to let an air boat up the creek making a lot of noise.  We headed there Thursday and had a most wonderful time sitting on the newly screened porch and the new shades.  It was even cool enough in the mornings for a fire on the porch.
Saturday night we hosted a fajita bar.  The weather could not have been more perfect.  Yesterday was of course Mother's Day and I kind of glossed over it.  It's hard to celebrate a day when you don't have a mother to call.  Oh yes, I should CELEBRATE her, and I do in my mind, it's just that I miss her sometimes too much on that day.  I do acknowledge the other mothers in my life, my daughters, who are fantastic mommas.  My darling mother-in-law, whom I miss dearly.  My friends, who are mommas.  My dear friend, Beverly, who lost her 94 year old mother just last week.  Mother's everywhere.

Okay, now I am going to ask a question.  I have posted here on my blog for nearly 18 years and the reader traffic has been mostly non-existent BUT lately, I've noticed that I'm getting a lot of traffic.  My posts are getting like 45-85 reads lately.  What is up with that and who are they and WHY DOESN'T anyone at least comment.  Is it bots, AI, WHAT!  Just curious what is going on.  If you're out there, maybe say something please.  I don't think I'm THAT interesting, am I.

Clouds and Memories

Good Sunday morning all.  I have to say this retirement thing is kind of awesome, finally.  We are truly getting into it now, now that Min and Max's lives are settling down.  This morning I actually slept in till 8 am.  That is honestly unheard of for me, usually.  I'm a 5 am kind of gal.  I still try to wake up at 4:30 or 5 but I MAKE myself go back to sleep.  I feel so much better getting more sleep and it's restful sleep.  I'm certainly missing the early morning time at my easel but I will adapt at some point.  We get up and just hang around the house or go out to breakfast and on the weekends he fixes me breakfast.  He even comes home at lunch time while I'm settling in to watch my soaps, AND WATCHES THEM WITH ME!  Oh, he doesn't pay much attention, but he's there with me and asks occasional questions about them.  Funny.  We headed to the cabin on Thursday this week planning on coming back on Saturday
afternoon to attend an engagement party.  When we did get back we opted to beg off because he has a head cold and Friday night I started a twinge of getting it too. DAMMIT!  I DO NOT need to get sick again.  So far though it's just an annoyance kind of drippy nose, slight scratch of the throat.  Honestly I feel like it's allergies but he definitely has a head cold.  I'm supposed to get my Covid booster tomorrow and flu shot on Tuesday but not sure if I need to reschedule while my body is dealing with this thing.  If I do okay today I will just keep the appointments.  I want to be vaccinated.

The drive Thursday afternoon was beautiful and the skies were full of amazing clouds.  I will surely try to paint some of these.  I just love road photos, especially to paint.

Recently I have been missing my sister, a lot, and today I'm missing Daddy.  I would go to see him a lot on Sunday mornings and the feeling to drive there overcame me briefly.  Friday I got a message from my niece wanting to know if I could talk.  She had a crochet question.  I said sure and we chatted about her project she was try to do and needed some advice.  I was glad to help.  She also contacted me earlier in the week for the Bathtub Chicken recipe that Momma used to make.  Her mother made it all the time but she could not find the recipe.  I was happy to dig it out for her, the original Momma used to use.  I know for a fact though that Dana reimagined her version so there might not have been an actual copy written down.  When I got off the phone for her I was glad she felt comfortable to reach out to me and sad that she had to.  Then I looked up to the sky and told Dana, "I'm here for her, I'm here for her."
Gosh, how that hit me, I MISS MY SISTER, my momma and daddy.

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day
This weekend I toddled off to Edmond for a Derek Penix painting workshop.  While away, just overnight mind you, this is what I came back to.  The sink, after only one night and one person in the house was nothing but glasses.  He is a funny guy with his glass usage.
I DID come home to this, an empty dishwasher, both drawers.  That has been his new thing that he does around the house is keep it empty and I just keep it loaded with dirty dishes, i.e. his glasses.
I also woke up this morning to a card and two vases of roses and carnations.
Part of the roses are going to his mother's grave today.  Her loss is still very fresh in our hearts.
The workshop was just what the doctor ordered.  Day 1 was slow taking off but was fun to listen, learn and chatter with fellow artists.
I've done many workshops over the years but this time I feel I've finally managed to scale the crap down that I bring.
Yesterday I managed to paint this little jewel and Derek actually said, "Fabulous Carla."  He has NEVER said that about my paintings.  I'll take the compliment.  It's not quite finished and hopefully I will get it all done tomorrow.  This week should be some quality time in front of my easel with my newfound feeling of wanting to PAINT!

Again, Happy Mother's Day to all the momma's of the world.  To my Momma and mother-in-law in heaven and to my darling daughters as they travel the world of motherhood.

"Julia"

I finished the roses.  Yes, I have it done and I love it.  I named them yellow roses but I'm changing it, mainly because I already have one called yellow roses.  I'm naming this painting "Julia" in honor of my mother.

Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day

I'm doing this on Saturday because for some reason this year I'm feeling the loss of Momma so keenly this year.  I don't want to think about it tomorrow.  She was my best friend, my confident, my ship in a storm.  My heart absolutely breaks with her not in my world.  I miss her so very much and cannot stand to even write these words right now.  Could be the gin and tonic I just finished off...could be...

Here's to all mother's everywhere and I will cherish the only mother figure I have left, my fantastic mother-in-law!

Happy Mother's Day

Yes, HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY to one and all this rainy, thundery, dreary Sunday.  It would be nice to be able to sit outside and soak up some much needed healing sun warmth but MOTHER nature had other ideas today.  Today I celebrate all mother's everywhere, here and gone.
Here's to sweet Susie and her multitude litter of kittens.  She was the best little momma kitty we had growing up.

Here's to my oldest on her 2nd Mother's Day with sweet Rio.

Here's to one of the best mother-in-laws a girl could ever want.  I love Gloria dearly.  To a grand lady who raised three honery boys to three great gentlemen.  At nearly 88 years old she has got it going with grace and love and tenderness.

And to my momma, Carol, who showed my brother, sister and I the world is out there for us to grab.  She taught us the love of cooking, gardening, reading, laughter, how to enjoy the small things.  She gave us the world.  I miss her every single day but I know she is not suffering anymore as she was.  She is at peace.  Her memory will be passed down to the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Sick Kiddo

Last night I received a call from LA, from Afton.  She is sick.  Fever, chills and the probability of a UTI and kidney stones.  Poor baby.  I am so far away from my baby but I know that she has Nick and a plethora of friends to be there for her.  That is what happens when you are thousands of miles away from family, you have pseudo family.  Apparently when I hung up with her, her friends were in route to rescue, and Nick was not far behind coming from a gig.  By the time they got their her fever was 102.3 and she was convulsing.  They rushed her to the ER where I got more texts from her.  She was better and the fever was going down, convulsing probably from the high fever.  All night I didn't receive a text or phone call so I was not too worried.  They would call!  Finally, I see on Facebook that she is home having been given antibiotics for the UTI and the probability that she has passed the stone.  Poor baby!  She was so scared away from family, from home and not being this sick, ever.  Well, I say that but when she was a wee one she had UTI's, a lot, as did I and my mother, so this does not a surprise to me at all.  I'm just glad she is home, with Nick, and her kitties and has a fabulous array of great friends to care for her in my absence.

Other Mother's

I know tomorrow is Mother's Day, but today I thought I would mention my other "mother's" that have influenced my life.

This is my Granny, my mother's mother.  Granny was awesome and influenced my life like you would not believe.  Granny only had the one child, my mother and she taught mother the stuff she taught us (Bro, Sis and I.)  We were only allowed to stay the night at her house one at a time.  We were told that it was so we could experience being the only one, the king of the hill in a way.  We were doted on and lavished with whatever we wanted, well, sort of.  We slept in, we got our favorite foods, we got to do little chores and made money to spend the next day at the dime store.  Granny showed us how to set the proper table and proper table manners.  Meals here were refined and very quiet with nice table talk.  We were taught how to iron sheets and pillow cases and how to make the proper bed.  It was fun really, we loved it.  When puberty hit my oily skin and oily hair became a problem, she set out to find a solution.  Every time it was my turn I would arrive on that Friday afternoon to find an array of skin things and shampoos, lemons or vinegar to cut the oil.  She doted on me the whole weekend.  When my girls came along it was the same for them.  They have tons of wonderful memories of their Great-granny, my granny to hold on to.

This is Grandma.  Grandma was my daddy's momma.  Grandma had five children, very different from mommas side.  Grandma had so many children, grandchildren, great grandchildren I was surprised she could keep them straight and sometimes the names were a jumble.  Family dinners over there were fun and full of people.  Kids would be running around, crying babies, laughter, and oh the cigarette smoke was in abundance, although Grandma or Grandpa did not smoke, everyone else did.  The house was messy and had piles of magazines, toys, kids.  It was an amusement park of grandparents houses.  We didn't get one on one time here as there were too many kids, and to spend the night, well, that was with three or four more cousins.  What I learned here was the tolerance of people and how to get along with others.

What I did learn was how I did not want to be, and I know that sounds weird but some of the stuff that happened I saw on that side of the family and didn't approve in my young mind.  At a young age I was shaped by these two different households.  I took it all in and it created the ME that is here today.  I'm not saying this is bad, it is what shapes a person, the influences, good or bad that affect how we mature and grow into adulthood and what paths we take.

This is Greatgranny.  The most influential and admired person in my life.  Greatgranny was Granny's mother. Greatgranny was like an over grown kid sometimes.  She raised four children, two boys and two girls.  They lived in Jay, the country and my favorite place to go when I was a child.  When we were there Greatgranny would take walks with us tagging along.  We would walk across the road to the tunnel under the highway.  I twas a cattle crossing and during the hot summers it was the cool place to be.  Usually the barn swallows would nest near the entrances and she would lift us up one by one to feel the eggs or the babies in the nests. A lot of the nests around the property had her white hair in them because when she emptied her hairbrush the hair would be attached to fence posts for the birds to carry away for their nest building.  She had bug collections and started me on how to collect bugs and butterflies, briefly.  She had a way with animals that was where I got my love of animals first.  When we stayed we took turns getting to sleep in her little feather bed that was in the freezer room.  She and Great granddaddy did not sleep together and somehow then, it didn't seem to register to me that was odd.  We would get up early and pad down to the barn with her and the collie, Sandy, close by to milk and feed Pet,'s the one cow.  The smells of the early morning mixed with the hay and feed and manure (trust me) was intoxicating.  MEMORIES were made.  When I wanted to run away from home as a child, as all children do at one time, that is where I wanted to run to, to Greatgranny's.

This is my honoring the "mothering" women in my life that shaped and influenced my life, made me the person you "read" here.

(You see there is a distinction in my family that granny, granddaddy, greatgranny, great-granddaddy ran on the maternal side as far as names go.  On my paternal side the names area grandma, grandpa, grandmother, etc.  I hope to follow in that tradition with this new granddaughter and be a "granny" but you never know.  My daddy bucked that tradition somehow and became PaPa.)

Staycation

Awww, this has been the most wonderful staycation I've every had.  Opting for not traveling this year we opted for the cabin.  I arrived on Sunday and have been here by myself until yesterday (Wednesday).  The Hubby had stuff but he's here now and it is nice.  I've spent most of the time reading and painting, getting a lot accomplished but yesterday I knew I wanted to get those newly adopted plants in the ground.  So up and ready I was and started.  I'm not as sore this morning as I thought I would be but it is all done.  Mulching, weeding, digging, transplanting, all stuff I've told myself, for several years, that I needed to do and haven't, now it is done.  The flowers are beautiful and even while I was planting the butterflies were happy.  I quick grabbed my camera to snap this one.  I'm content.  I'm at the cabin, I'm relaxed, I've accomplished, The Hubby is here, my world is complete.

Mother's Day is fast approaching and I will be a bit sad to not be able to wish my momma a Happy Mother's Day but I'm okay now.  Time does heal.  Actually, while gardening yesterday I felt closer to momma with some of the plants I put in the ground.  I thought of her as the peony went in, her iris's were given new homes and the hollyhocks I put in the corner of my yard.  They were all for the memory of momma, so Happy Mother's Day momma!

I Am An ____________

Last night as I was trying to go to sleep my mind was working a bit overtime.  In fact, It took a good hour for me to finally doze off, and it was a fitful sleep.

While tossing and turning my mind went to what I accomplished yesterday.  I signed a painting, started a few more and felt like I had finally come into my own.

I have always wanted a title, an accountant, a lawyer, a teacher...something.

Sometimes when I read obituaries some of the "older" ladies are listed as "housewives!"  In this day and time more women are working women so you don't see the term as often.  I have told the family, on numerous occasions that I would come back and haunt them if they put that in my obit.  I am much more than a housewife.  I am an office manager, partner in a business, scheduler, bookkeeper, planner, chef, etc.  I mean these things as all of women do, whether you work outside the home or not.  We ALL WORK!  I've been very proud that I was able to raise my children by being as close to a stay at home mother as possible while also enjoying the labors of have a job too.  Being self employed with The Hubby has given me that opportunity to pretty much set my hours to be with my kinds.  It has been a perfect "marriage."

With all that in mind, on my profile I list all of these assets with a bit about why I am called Jill of All Trades.  I talk about my ability to do a ton of stuff fairly well but not perfect and the fact that I tend to jump around with projects.  Whether it is a bit of ADD or the Gemini, Twin thing going on I have my fingers in all kinds of pots.  I've also listed that I now call myself an artist but that has been with a bit of apprehension.  I truly have not felt that I am even though I list it.  Yesterday, I felt that I was an artist.  I have come to realize that I have finally, FINALLY found a talent that I do very, very well.  Something that I can get paid for and noticed.  It is an exhilarating feeling I can tell you to know that I am an ARTIST!

I have done a few sketches of my friend Harri's sweet doggies that have passed recently in the hopes of trying to paint them.  Yesterday I started.  I have sort of promised to try and paint a family grouping for a friend from high school and started that this week in class.  I have to say even I can't believe I have done what I have done.

I finally have a title.
I am an ARTIST!
