What-da Ya Call It?

I'm in a bit of a quandary and probably making a mountain out of a molehill.  It's also a bit early to be worrying about it but I do.  What-da ya call it?  That is my question and I am in need of an answer, maybe.  The time is drawing very near for little granddaughter to make her sweet appearance into this world and I thought I knew what I wanted to be called, but last night I started questioning that in my head.  I know FOR SURE that I don't want to be called MiMi!  That belongs to my mother-in-law.  I do not want to be called grandma as that has an old image in my head that I do not like!  I'll tell you the history of grandparent naming in my family.  There is actually a kind of theme to it.  On my mother's side of the family the trend is:  Granny and Greatgranny and so on.  On my father's side, it goes Grandma and Grandmother, etc.  I really thought I would follow the Granny trend, and besides that side of the family has the best memories for me.  Grandmother or Grandma is stuffy and old and I don't want to be called Gran as that is my sister-in-law's name and GiGi seem's to be everyone's name and I don't like it.  Oh, I'm in a pickle with this.  Do you just let the little babe decide or do you start the process by instilling the name over and over and over again?  What is the process?  Can anyone give me some help PLEASE!  I mean I could push the Granny thing but I might end up as Gran or Nee or G or I DON'T KNOW!!!!!  Suggestions!

Ah ah, what a sweet quandary ! My daughter calls my mother Granny and that has stuck with my (French) nephews. I personally wouldn't like it because it sounds too old and also, it is reserved for my own mother. I think I would like my future grandkids, if I ever have any, to call me by my first name. I'm sure it will sound strange to the people who know me because I'm such a stickler for respect and discipline but what's in a name anyway ? Congratulations on your becoming a grandmother and a very warm welcome to my blog as my latest follower !x

When I became an aunt for the first time, I didn't like want to be called Aunt Michelle. Sounded too stuffy and didn't roll off the tongue. So I said I would be Aunt Chelle, and I was, until my nephew was old enough to talk! He couldn't say Aunt Chelle and it morphed into "OhCho" and that is the name that has stuck. All my nephews call me OhCho and my daughter says I will be OhCho for her children too!

I could see you being a Gran although, now that I think about it, I can't see you as anything other than Momma :)
I'm insisting that Rio call me "Auntie Afton". Aunt Afton is too weird to say - it has this weird glottal stop. I've been making all my friends and colleagues call me Auntie Afton in preparation. I feel I've really come into character :D

The grandkids called my grandmother Granny until I came on the scene and renamed her Nanny. ;.) She was the best Nanny (with my PawPaw). My parents are MeeMaw and PeePaw while my mom is Lola (which is tagalog for grandmother). My husband's mom is Grandma Babe (with Grandaddy-O). My little ones' grandmother goes by GoGo because when they were really little they were always going somewhere so she was dubbed GoGo. I love it. I am sure something cool and unique will come to mind to you or someone close to you. I can't see you as Gran or any of those names you mentioned but I am excited for you to be a grandmother!
