How Do You Drop Off

The question today at NaBloPoMo is "What do you do to make yourself fall asleep at night?"  This is a very good topic.  When I was young I had a heck of a time falling asleep but once there it was hard to wake up.  I remember laying in bed with my mind whirring and this is still true today.  I would lay there and listen to the sounds of quiet in the house, tossing and turning, not being able to make my mind shut off.  Sometimes if it is really bad I might get up and watch TV for a bit or if I'm worrying about something that prevents me to nod off I will write in my journal.  I find that if I write it out then it is released and I can let it go for a bit.  Doesn't always work, but I try.  I sometimes watch television, boring shows that let my mind wander and not worry about what is really on my mind.  That kind of drivel works fairly well.  If it is really bad I might write stories in my head and then they can end up in my dreams.  Kind of freaky but it works.  I have to make sure they're not ghosts or monster stuff.  Most of the time now I am so very tired that by the time my head hits the pillow I'm out pretty quick.  Waking up at 5 am and working out for an hour every morning and doing what I do during the day I'm pooped!  I find that exercise and limited time on the laptop and less television helps me to dreamland quickly.  What do you do to make yourself fall asleep at night?

For me, sleep only comes after I release the hold every little thing I've encountered has on my body. I start with my toes and work my way up to my head, mentally letting go of anything and everything that isn't "mine." I don't have to catalog them all (I'm certain I couldn't anyway), I just have to put forth the effort to let them float back into the Universe. Only then can I rest.

Thanks so much for your comment on my blog!

I would be awake till two or three AM on a regular basis, mind spinning, till I was diagnosed ADD. The meds keep me alert all day, but now I fall asleep at night. It's awesome.
